At the 2024 ILGA conference in South Africa, an unexpected encounter in an elevator led to an exciting new collaboration between Women's Equality Space (WES) and LesbianGlobal. It all started on the evening of November 13th, after a lively reunion for the LBQ Connect Program participants. Deborah Iroegbu, Executive Director of WES, was mingling with others when she headed to the elevator to wind down after the evening's festivities.
As fate would have it, Naomi and Kathy, the co-founders of LesbianGlobal, were also leaving the event and shared the elevator with Deborah. After exchanging pleasantries, Naomi, with her signature curiosity and passion for global issues, inquired about the current situation of LBQ+ women in Nigeria. This simple question sparked a heartfelt conversation about the impact of the LBQ Connect program, especially in Africa.
Before they reached the ground floor, the conversation turned into something much more significant. Naomi handed Deborah a card and asked her to send an email. What started as a casual chat turned into a profound connection. Deborah followed up on the conversation, and Naomi and Kathy responded promptly, offering a surprising proposition.
At the time, LesbianGlobal's web developer was unavailable, and they were in need of someone to manage LesbianGlobal’s web development and social media. It was a perfect fit. With that, a powerful partnership was born.
Deborah reflected on the encounter, saying,
"It’s been a life-changing moment for me, for WES, and for the many women in the WES program. This collaboration has opened up incredible opportunities for us to expand our impact."
Today, Deborah and the WES team proudly manage LesbianGlobal’s website and oversee its social media presence, helping to amplify LBQ+ voices globally. What began as a spontaneous encounter in an elevator turned into a thriving WES LesbianGlobal collaboration, showing how small moments can lead to meaningful change.
